However the yellow kugwheel on the dash warning for SMG problems turns on and the car looses gears from time to time (e.g. when standing still at a red light).

One of the most common problems I see on the 330 is that it causes the owner to do random and unnecessary fix and maintenance to it using cheap or ebay parts, resulting in it breaking in the process. Then it causes the owner to blame BMW for poor engineering.

Edit: I found the problem. Installed was a original BMW filter from Bosch with BMW part number and logo. The original O-Ring 91x4mm was a bit too large, actually 93.8mm inner dia., out of tolerance or bad production. Installed a new oil filter, that o-ring was fitting much better and tight on the lid, made a test drive, no more leaks.
The most common is perhaps the Style 135 MV2 alloy wheel, similar to that used on the later E46. But an optional split-rim style 108, the āComposite Star spokeā wheel was quite often specced
Also, you should be aware the M3 moved up in size quit a bit since the e46. The M2 is the spiritual successor to the e46 and the M3 is somewhere between what a 3 and 5 used to be. Multiple random electrical issues is a common sign of a battery that is nearing the end of its useful life. Quick suggestion, if you car is running poorly now that the weather is cold, replace at least the lower intake elbow, the DISA O-ring and the CCV lower oil return hose, clear the DME codes, about $50. Then worry about other things if the car is still running poorly or has additional CEL/MIL codes.
